Training Information for Coaches

All coaches must meet Region 84 and AYSO national requirements before participating. This guide outlines certification, registration, and scheduling details for the Fall season.

What certifications are required?

To coach, volunteers must complete several certifications:

Safe Haven (Online)
SafeSport
Live Scan Fingerprinting
CDC Concussion Awareness
Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness
Age-specific coach training

All coaches must be registered in Sports Connect, with an e-signed volunteer application submitted. This triggers a background check from the AYSO National Office.

How do I register for training?

Register for coach training through www.AYSOU.org using your Sports Connect login. You'll receive an email if a class is cancelled due to low enrollment.

Where are trainings held?

Attend a course in your own region when possible to receive local guidelines and meet fellow coaches. You may also attend an AYSO course in another region and still receive certification.

Is there a cost to attend?

Courses may include a fee. For Region 84-hosted classes:

Area 11L volunteers attend at no cost.
Volunteers outside Area 11L must bring a check payable to “Region 84.” No cash accepted.

Note: There is no cost for coaches to complete required training. If a fee is incurred, Region 84 will reimburse the coach for the cost of that class.

What is the Volunteer Protection Act?

To be covered under the Volunteer Protection Act, coaches must complete:

Safe Haven certification
CDC Concussion Awareness
Age-specific coach training

Important: Certification must match the division you coach. For example, 12U certification does not qualify for coaching 8U unless you hold an 8U certificate.
